Finger Weaving - Alta R. Turner

Finger Weaving: Indian Braiding is a 48-page handbook about the art of finger weaving. The experienced weaver, Alta Turner, takes the novice through 16 projects of finger weaving. Providing detailed step-by-step instructions she begins with basic information about this flat braiding including methods and materials. The first technique is the diagonal stripe pattern for a belt.

The book builds on this and provides details for creating chevron, double chevron, diamond, double diamond, lightning, double diamond, and arrowhead designs. The final woven project is shown in full-colour photographs.

Some of the photos show museum-quality sashes and belts acquired from Sac and Fox, Creek, Seneca, Osage, and Cherokee weavers. Additional techniques include the Peruvian rep braids and cross rep braids.

In addition to belts and sashes, these woven pieces can be used to decorate clothing or as ties, collars, and headbands. Additional black and white photos along with detailed illustrations provide the beginner and experienced craftsperson with an excellent resource for learning this art of traditional weaving.
